arrive は古フランス語 arriver を経て、俗ラテン語 *arripare「岸に着く」にさかのぼるとされる。ad-「〜へ」+ ripa「岸」からできた語で、もとは船が岸辺に着くことだったため、今の「到着する」へ発展した。関連語は riparian, arrive at。
Arrive came through Old French arriver from a Vulgar Latin form meaning "come to shore." It is based on ad- "to" and ripa "shore" or "riverbank." At first it was used especially for ships reaching land, and later it widened to any kind of coming to a place. A related Latin root appears in riparian.
