stopping は stop に -ing が付いた形で、「止めること・止まっていること」を表す。stop は古フランス語 estoper を経て俗ラテン語 *stuppare「詰め物でふさぐ」にさかのぼり、stopper と同根なので、もとは「ふさいで流れを止める」感覚から来ている。
Stopping is built from stop with the ending -ing. Stop came through Old French estoper from Late Latin *stuppare, meaning "to plug with tow or stuffing." The original image was blocking an opening so that movement or flow could not continue. That physical sense later became the general idea of causing something to end or pause.
