古英語 sæf（無事な）はラテン語 salvus（健全な、無傷の）に由来し、-lyは副詞化接尾辞。salvusからはsalvation（救済）やsave（救う）も派生。「傷つかず健全な状態で」が原義で、そこから「安全に」の意味が生まれた。
