古英語 sūr（確実な）に副詞語尾 -ly が付いた形。sure はラテン語 sēcūrus（心配のない）から古フランス語 seur を経て英語に入った。sē-（～なしに）+ cūra（心配）が原義で、security（安全）や secure（安心な）と同根。「心配がない状態」→「確かに」という意味の流れが見える。
