sure は古フランス語 seur、さらにラテン語 securus に由来し、se-「離れて」+ cur(a)「心配」が核。直訳すれば「心配がない」で、そこから「安全な」「確かな」という意味へ育った。secure や security も同根で、確信と安全が結びつく語だとわかる。
Sure came into English through Old French seur, from Latin securus. That Latin word is built from se- and cura, with the basic sense of being free from care or worry. From "without worry," the meaning developed into both "safe" and "certain." Secure and security share the same root.
