Certain means specific and clearly identified, or sure and without doubt, depending on the context. It is often used before a noun to limit what you are talking about, as in particular people or things. In some situations, it also means confident that something is true.

certain は certainly や be certain の「確かだ」と結び付けると覚えやすい語です。話し手の頭の中では対象がもう“確定している”ので、a certain person / a certain day のように「どれか分かっているが、名前は言わない」という使い方になります。specific ははっきり特定して示す感じですが、certain は少しぼかして含みを持たせやすいのが違いです。to a certain extent の形も頻出。なお certain には「確信している」の意味もあるので、文型で見分けると混乱しません。
Connect this use of `certain` with the idea of something already settled in the speaker's mind. In `a certain person` or `a certain reason`, the speaker has someone or something specific in mind but does not name it. This is different from `be certain`, which means to feel sure that something is true.

certain は古フランス語 certain を経て、ラテン語 certus「決まった・より分けられた」に由来します。語幹 cert- は「見分けて定める」感覚をもち、certify や certificate も同根なので、certain が“判断ずみで確かなもの”だとわかります。
