Certitude is a strong feeling of complete certainty that something is true. It is a more formal word than certainty and is often used in serious writing or speech. It can describe confidence based on belief, knowledge, or personal conviction.

certain を知っていれば核はつかみやすい語です。cert- は「確かな」で、certificate、certify、certain と同じ仲間。さらに -tude は attitude などにもある「状態・性質」を表す語尾なので、certitude は直感的に「確かだという状態」= 確信。confidence が能力への自信にも広く使えるのに対し、certitude は「疑いが入り込まない確実さ」に寄ります。宗教・信念・断定的な主張で見たら、揺るがない確信の語だと結びつけると覚えやすいです。
Build it from the same family as `certain`, `certify`, and `certificate`, all carrying the idea of being sure or confirmed. The ending `-tude`, like in `attitude`, turns it into a state or quality. So `certitude` is the state of being completely sure, stronger and firmer than everyday `confidence`.

certitude はフランス語経由で後期ラテン語 certitudo に由来し、certus「確かな」+ 抽象名詞語尾 -tude から成ります。certain や certificate と同じ cert- を持ち、「判断が固まった状態」から「確信」の意味になりました。
Certitude came into English through French from Late Latin certitudo. It was built from certus, meaning "sure" or "settled," plus a noun ending that makes an abstract state. From the sense of firmness or settled certainty, it developed into the meaning of deep inward certainty; certain and certificate share the same root.
