doubt はラテン語 dubitare「ためらう」が古フランス語 doute を経て入った語です。語幹は「二つ」を表す duo 系で、心が二つに割れて決めきれないことが「疑う」になりました。dubious や double にも、二重で定まらない感覚が残っています。
"Doubt" came through Old French from Latin dubitare, meaning "to hesitate" or "to be uncertain." It is connected to the idea of "two," as if the mind is split between two possibilities.
