pay の語源・成り立ち Etymology
古フランス語 paier を経て、ラテン語 pacare「満足させる・なだめる」に由来する。相手を満足させて債務を済ませる感覚から、支払う意味になった。
Pay came through Old French paier from Latin pacare, which meant "to satisfy" or "to calm." The idea developed into satisfying a person or settling a debt, and from there it came to mean giving money in payment.
