lowは古ノルド語lagrにさかのぼり、さらにゲルマン祖語で「横たわる・平らにある」を表す語根に連なります。分解しにくい基本語ですが、lieやlowlyも同系で、「低い」は上へ伸びるのでなく地面に近く寝ている感じだと見えてきます。
