lowは古ノルド語lagrにさかのぼり、さらにゲルマン祖語で「横たわる・平らにある」を表す語根に連なります。分解しにくい基本語ですが、lieやlowlyも同系で、「低い」は上へ伸びるのでなく地面に近く寝ている感じだと見えてきます。
"Low" goes back to Old Norse "lagr," and further to an old Germanic root connected with lying flat. It is related in sense to "lie" and also to "lowly." The basic image is not height in a strict way, but something close to the ground or laid down.
