understandは古英語understandanに由来し、under「下・間で」+ stand「立つ」が核です。情報の下支えに立って全体を見通す感覚から「理解する」となり、standやwithstandにも同じstandの芯が残ります。
Understand comes from Old English understandan. Although it looks like under + stand, in early Germanic it meant something like standing among, before, or close to a matter so that you grasp it. Over time, that sense became the modern meaning of mentally grasping something; stand and withstand keep the same core idea of standing.
