know は古英語 cnawan にさかのぼり、さらに印欧祖語 *gno-「知る・見分ける」につながる。語頭の k は昔は発音され、knowledge や canny、さらに diagnose の -gnose- も同根なので、『知る』は『見分けて把握する』ことだとわかる。
