thing の語源・成り立ち Etymology
thing は古英語 thing にさかのぼり、もとは「集会で話し合う案件・議題」を指した語です。接辞より語幹そのものが核で、「話題の事柄」から「もの一般」へ意味が広がりました。北欧議会名 Althing に同じ root が残り、thing が元来は「取り上げられる事柄」だと見えてきます。
Thing goes back to Old English thing, which originally meant a matter discussed in an assembly or meeting. The core idea was not an object, but a case, issue, or subject brought up for talk. From "matter under discussion," the meaning gradually widened to almost any object or matter. The same root appears in the name Althing, the Icelandic parliament.
