they の語源・成り立ち Etymology
古ノルド語の þeir に由来し、英語の三人称複数代名詞として定着した。もともとの hie を置き換える形で広まり、them、their と同じ語群を作る。北欧語の影響を示す代表的な基本語の一つ。
