古英語 enig に由来し、語幹は one と同じ系列の an「一つ」。もともと「一つでもある」「どれか一つの」という感覚を持ち、そこから不特定のもの全般や自由選択を表す語へ発展した。none などの語とも関連する。
Any comes from Old English enig, built from the same root as one and an. It first meant something like "one, no matter which" or "even a single one." From there, it grew into a word for unspecified things in general and for free choice; it is also historically connected with none.
