二つ以上の選択肢のうち、どれを選んでもよいこと、または選ばれたものが何であっても同じ結果や条件が成り立つことを表します。名詞を修飾したり、代名詞的に使われたり、節を導いたりします。
Whichever means it does not matter which person, thing, or choice is selected from a limited group. It is often used when any option is acceptable or when the final choice depends on another condition.

whichever は which + ever の結合で、which は古英語 hwilc にさかのぼる語です。what や whether と同じ疑問語の根をもち、ever が「どれであっても」を足すので、「どれを選んでもよい」という自由さがそのまま形になっています。
Whichever is made from which and ever. Which comes from Old English hwilc and belongs to the same question-word family as what and whether. Adding ever gave the sense of "no matter which one." The word therefore developed a feeling of free choice among options.
