none は古英語 nan から来て、ne「〜ない」＋ an「一つの」がそのまま結びついた語です。直訳すると「一つもない」で、no や one と並べると、“ゼロ”というより“単位になる一つさえ欠ける”感覚が見えてきます。
None comes from Old English nan, formed from ne, meaning "not," and an, meaning "one." Its original sense was literally "not one." Over time, it became the common word for the complete absence of people or things. It is closely related to no and one.
