no「ない」＋one「一人」と分けて、「一人さえいない」と覚えると定着しやすい。No one knows. のように no one 自体が否定を含むため、動詞に not を重ねないのが基本。文法上は単数扱いなので No one is ...、No one knows ... とする。nobody とほぼ同義だが、no one は少し中立的に響く。
Read the expression as no plus one: “not even one person.” Because no one already makes the clause negative, use an affirmative verb form in sentences such as No one knows, rather than adding another not. Treat it as singular for agreement: No one is and No one has. It is close in meaning to nobody, though no one can sound slightly more neutral. Also remember the standard spelling: no one is written as two words, unlike nobody.
