古フランス語 dancier（踊る）に行為者接尾辞 -er が付いた語。さらに古くはフランク語（ゲルマン系）の *dintjan「前後に動く」に遡るとされる。関連語に dance（踊り）、dancing（踊ること）がある。「動き回る人」が原義である。
