late「遅い」を知っていると、「時間の後ろのほうにある時期」→「ここ最近」とつながる。-ly が付いて副詞になり、文全体にかかって「最近はね」の感覚を出す語。特に現在完了と相性がよく、I’ve been tired lately. のように「少し前から今まで続く最近」を表しやすい。recently も近いが、lately は会話での“このところ”らしさが強い。late「遅れて」、latest「最新の」、latter と混同しないようにまとめて見分けると覚えやすい。
