latest の語源・成り立ち Etymology
古英語 læt（遅い）の最上級形 latest に由来。語根はゲルマン祖語 *lataz（遅い、のろい）で、late → later → latest と比較変化する。「最も遅い」→「最も最近の」→「最新の」と意味が転じた。関連語：late（遅い）、lately（最近）。
Blow comes from Old English blawan, meaning "to blow," and in keeps its basic sense of movement inward. The phrase first suggested something being blown inside by the wind. From that image, it came to mean a person arriving casually or unexpectedly, as if carried in by chance.
