覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
news は new「新しい」に結び付く「新しい出来事・知らせ」ですが、語尾が -s でも通常は不可算名詞で単数扱いです。必ず This news is important のように is を使い、個別の一件なら a piece of news と数えます。watch the news、good news もまとめて覚えましょう。
Connect news with new: news tells you about new events or new information. The essential grammar point is that news normally behaves as an uncountable singular noun even though it ends in -s. Say This news is important, not This news are important. To count separate items, use a piece of news or two pieces of news. Learn the common combinations watch the news, hear the news, good news, and bad news. This pattern prevents the misleading final s from making you treat news like an ordinary plural noun.
例文
I watch the news every morning.
私は毎朝ニュースを見ます。
This news is important.
このニュースは重要です。
We heard good news today.
私たちは今日よい知らせを聞きました。

news の語源・成り立ち Etymology
中英語 newes で、形容詞 new(新しい)の複数形が名詞化したもの。古英語 nīwe はゲルマン祖語に遡り、ラテン語 novus(新しい)と同根。novel(新奇な)や innovate(革新する)も同じ印欧語根 *newo- から派生。「新しい事柄の集まり」が原義。
News developed from Middle English newes, originally a plural or collective use of new referring to new things or new information. New itself comes from Old English nīwe and belongs to an ancient Indo-European word family also represented by Latin novus, “new.” Over time, news became a fixed mass noun for reports and information, retaining its final -s while generally taking singular agreement in modern English.
