report の語源・成り立ち Etymology
report はラテン語 reportare に由来し、re-「後ろへ、戻して」+ portare「運ぶ」から成ります。portable や transport と同じ port- をもち、情報を相手のもとへ『運び返す』のが原義です。だから report は、見聞きした事実を持ち帰って渡す行為だとわかります。
