retort はラテン語 retorquere「ねじ返す」が元で、re-「返して」+ torquere「ねじる」から成ります。torque や distort と同じ語根をもち、相手の言葉をそのまま「ひねって返す」感じが、言い返しという意味に直結します。
Retort comes from Latin retorquere, meaning "to twist back." It combines re- "back" with torquere "to twist," the same root seen in torque and distort. The image is of turning someone's words back on them, which led naturally to the sense of a sharp reply.
