相手の意見や主張に対して、証拠や論拠を示しながら反対の立場を述べること。反対意見を明確に提示する言説で、相手の論理や事実の正当性を崩そうとする目的で使われる。
A rebuttal is a statement or argument that answers and tries to disprove another claim. It is common in debates, discussions, law, and academic writing. A rebuttal does more than disagree; it gives reasons or evidence against the other side.

rebuttal は、まず動詞 rebut（反論する）を先に押さえると覚えやすいです。語尾 -al は approve→approval のように「行為・結果」を名詞化するので、rebuttal は「反論すること／反論の中身」。単なる disagree より硬く、討論・法廷・エッセイで、相手の主張に証拠や論理で返す場面が似合います。a rebuttal to the claim, issue a rebuttal の形で覚えると使い所も一緒に定着します。refutation は「誤りを打ち砕く」強さがやや前面に出るので、その違いも意識すると混同しにくいです。

英語 rebut「押し返す・論駁する」に名詞語尾 -al が付いた語で、re-「返して」+ 古フランス語 bouter「突く、押す」にさかのぼります。もとは物理的に「押し返す」感覚で、そこから相手の主張を言葉で押し返すことが rebuttal「反論」になりました。関連語は rebut, abut です。
Rebuttal was formed in English from rebut plus the noun ending -al. Rebut goes back to Old French bouter, meaning "to push" or "thrust," with re- adding the sense of "back." The original image was physically pushing something back, which later became the idea of answering an argument by pushing it back in words; compare rebut and abut.
