英語 rebut「押し返す・論駁する」に名詞語尾 -al が付いた語で、re-「返して」+ 古フランス語 bouter「突く、押す」にさかのぼります。もとは物理的に「押し返す」感覚で、そこから相手の主張を言葉で押し返すことが rebuttal「反論」になりました。関連語は rebut, abut です。
Rebuttal was formed in English from rebut plus the noun ending -al. Rebut goes back to Old French bouter, meaning "to push" or "thrust," with re- adding the sense of "back."
