解説
社会や政治の決定に異議を唱えたり、特定の政策に反対したりする人を指す。デモや集会でプラカードやコールを使って自分の要求を伝え、変化を求める。多くの場合、平和的に行動するが、大きな声で意思表示する点では共通している。
覚え方のコツ
protest を知っていれば、その行動をする人が protester。-er は teacher, runner と同じ「〜する人」で覚える。ニュースでは protesters gathered, student protesters, anti-government protesters などの形でよく見え、「政策や決定に声を上げる人」の像と結びつけると定着しやすい。activist は継続的な運動家、rioter は暴徒寄りで、protester 自体は抗議する人という中立的な語。
