証言する（しょうげんする）とは、自分が見たり知ったりしたことを、特に裁判で述べることです。真実を明かすための重要な証拠となります。
To testify means to give a formal statement about what you know, especially in a court of law. A person testifies to tell the truth about an event, situation, or experience. The word can also be used more generally to show or prove that something is true.

testify は test と見た目が近いので、「事実が本当かどうかを厳しく確かめる場で話す語」として覚えると残りやすいです。日常の say や tell ではなく、法廷・宣誓・証拠の空気を伴うフォーマル語。名詞 testimony とセットで結び、 witnesses testify in court, testify against him, testify that ... の形ごと覚えるのが有効です。さらに testify to ～ で「～を裏づける・示す」に広がるので、単なる『話す』で止めないのがコツです。

testifyはラテン語testificari「証人として示す」に由来し、testis「証人」+ facere「作る・なす」が核です。testimonyやtestimonialも同根で、事実を証人つきで立てる感覚から「証言する」になりました。
Testify comes from Latin testificari, meaning "to bear witness," from testis "witness" and facere "to make or do." The word originally had the sense of showing something through a witness. Testimony and testimonial come from the same root.
