courtはラテン語cohors「囲われた庭・宮廷」が古フランス語を経て入った語である。courtyardやcohortも同根で、閉じた場に人と権威が集まる感覚から「宮廷」や「法廷」へ広がったと考えると筋が通る。
Court came into English through Old French, from Latin cohors, which first meant an enclosed yard or group around a place. The same root appears in cohort and is related in form to courtyard. Because important people and authority gathered in such enclosed spaces, the word later grew to mean a royal court and then a law court.
