tribunalはフランス語を経てラテン語tribunal「護民官・裁判官の席」へさかのぼり、さらにtribunusはtribus「部族」に連なります。もとは高い裁きの壇を指し、そこから法廷の意味になりました。関連語はtribune、tribeです。
It comes through French from Latin tribunal, meaning the seat of a tribune or judge, and is related to tribunus and tribus. It first referred to a raised place for administering justice and later to a judicial body.
