A sociologist is a scientist or researcher who studies society, social behavior, and human relationships. Sociologists examine topics such as culture, groups, institutions, and social change.

social（社会の）と sociology（社会学）を知っていれば覚えやすい語です。まず sociologist は「sociology をやる人」と見ればよく、-ist は scientist, artist などと同じく「その分野の人」。psychologist が心、biologist が生物なら、sociologist は社会を研究する人です。social worker は支援職、sociologist は研究者という違いも意識すると混同しにくくなります。
