ukulele の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ukulele はハワイ語で、uku「ノミ」＋lele「跳ぶ」から成るとされます。指が弦の上を素早く跳ねる様子をノミに見立てた名で、lele は mokulele「飛行機」にも入るため、「跳ぶ」という核が見えます。
Ukulele comes from Hawaiian, usually explained as uku "flea" and lele "jump." The name may have compared the quick movement of the player's fingers to a jumping flea. The element lele also appears in Hawaiian words with the idea of jumping or flying.
