Precautionary describes an action taken in advance to prevent possible harm, danger, or trouble. It is often used for safety measures, rules, or decisions made before a problem actually happens.

まず caution「注意」が核。pre + caution で『前もって注意する』→ precaution『予防策』、そこに -ary がついて『予防上の』。precautionary measures, precautionary step, precautionary principle など、名詞の前で『万一に備えて先にやっておく』場面でよく出る。preventive が病気予防など広い『予防的』なのに対し、precautionary は危険がまだ確定していなくても念のため慎重に取る対応、という感触で覚えると定着しやすい。
