cousin は古フランス語 cousin を経て、ラテン語 consobrinus「母方のいとこ」にさかのぼる。con-「共に」が含まれ、もとは限られた親類を指したが、英語では広く「いとこ」全般の語になった。cousinly, cousinhood が関連語。
Cousin came into English through Old French from Latin consobrinus. In Latin it first referred more narrowly to a mother's sister's child, but in English it widened to mean a cousin in general.
