何かのそば、側面、または隣に位置することを意味します。物や人の近くに在る状態を示します。
Beside means next to or at the side of someone or something. It is used to describe physical position. In careful writing, it is different from "besides," which means "in addition to."
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
beside は side が見えているので、「側・横」の感覚をそのまま手がかりにすると覚えやすい語です。by や next to に近く、物や人がぴったり近くにある場面で使い、sit beside me, stand beside the bed のように位置関係を静かに示します。上や下ではなく「横」を意識すると混同しにくいです。要注意は besides で、-s が付くと「そのうえ」「〜に加えて」など別語になるので、beside=場所、besides=追加情報と対比で覚えると定着します。
Notice the word side inside beside. That gives you the image of something at your side, not above or below. It is close to by or next to in place. Be careful: besides with an extra s means addition, not position.

beside の語源・成り立ち Etymology
古英語 be sīdan（～の側に）が一語化したもの。be-（～のそばに）+ side（側面）という構成。ゲルマン祖語 *sīdō（側）に遡る。関連語：besides（その上、～を除いて）、alongside（～と並んで）。「側にいる」という空間的な意味が核にある前置詞。
Beside comes from Old English be sidan, literally "by the side." It joined the elements be- "near, by" and side, from an older Germanic word meaning "side." The basic idea stayed spatial, and related words like besides and alongside keep the same root sense of being next to something.
