古英語 seofon（7）＋序数接尾辞 -th から。ゲルマン祖語 *sebun、さらに印欧祖語 *septm̥ に遡る。ラテン語 septem も同根で、September（もとは7番目の月）と同じ語源。7という数が印欧語族全体で共通していることがわかる。
