古英語 seofon（7）＋序数接尾辞 -th から。ゲルマン祖語 *sebun、さらに印欧祖語 *septm̥ に遡る。ラテン語 septem も同根で、September（もとは7番目の月）と同じ語源。7という数が印欧語族全体で共通していることがわかる。
"Seventh" comes from Old English, built from the word for "seven" plus the ordinal ending -th. Its deeper root goes back through Germanic to an Indo-European form also seen in Latin septem.
