子どもが遊ぶための品物や、娯楽として使う小さな道具を指します。人形、積み木、ぬいぐるみ、模型など幅広い物に使われ、比喩的に「人の思いどおりに扱われるもの」という意味で使われることもあります。

toy の語源・成り立ち Etymology
中英語 toie「つまらない物・たわむれ」にさかのぼり、語源は不確かですが、中世オランダ語 toy やオランダ語 tuig「道具・がらくた」と結びつけて説明されます。もとは「大した価値のない物」だったため、そこから「気晴らしに使う物」へ意味がしぼられ、今の「おもちゃ」になったと分かります。同系語にドイツ語 Spielzeug があります。

Its deeper origin is uncertain, but it is often linked to Dutch or Low German words for tools or small, unimportant objects.
