解説 Definition

game は「ゲーム」「試合」という意味です。日本語の「ゲーム」と同じく遊びを指しますが、英語ではスポーツの試合を表すこともよくあります。

An activity with rules that people play for enjoyment or competition, or a particular sports event between players or teams. The word can refer both to recreational play and to a match that begins at a scheduled time.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

日本語の「ゲーム」より範囲が広く、遊びだけでなくスポーツの「試合」にも使うと覚えます。play a game はゲームをする、the game starts は試合が始まる、という典型的な組み合わせを場面ごとに結び付けましょう。古英語で「喜び・遊び」を表した語から発達した語です。

Connect game with two familiar scenes. In one, friends play a game for fun after school; in the other, spectators wait for a sports game to start. English uses the same noun for both, so it is broader than the Japanese loanword ゲーム, which often suggests electronic or recreational play. Useful combinations include play a game, win a game, and the game starts at three. The older sense of enjoyment and play helps unite these modern meanings: whether casual or competitive, a game is an organized activity people take part in.

例文

We play a game after school.

私たちは放課後にゲームをします。

The game starts at three.

試合は3時に始まります。

game の語源・成り立ち Etymology

古英語 gamen(喜び・楽しみ・遊び)が語源。ゲルマン祖語 *gamaną(参加・仲間)に由来し、元は「人が集まって楽しむこと」を意味した。gamble(賭け事)やgammon(バックギャモン)と同根。遊びから競技・試合へと意味が広がった。

Game comes from Old English gamen, meaning “joy, amusement, or play,” and is related to forms found elsewhere in the Germanic languages. Its earliest sense centered on shared enjoyment and recreation. Over time, the word came to denote an organized activity governed by rules and then a particular competitive event or sports match. This history explains why modern game can refer both to something played for amusement and to a scheduled contest.
