turtle はフランス語 tortue「カメ」が英語化する途中で、古英語 turtle「キジバト」の音に引かれて今の形になった語。だから tortoise やスペイン語 tortuga と並べると、別語に見えて実は同じ「カメ」の系統だと分かる。
"Turtle" goes back to French "tortue," meaning a turtle or tortoise. In English, its form changed partly because it was influenced by the older word "turtle," which already named a kind of dove. That is why "turtle," "tortoise," and Spanish "tortuga" look different today but belong to the same historical family.
