turtle はフランス語 tortue「カメ」が英語化する途中で、古英語 turtle「キジバト」の音に引かれて今の形になった語。だから tortoise やスペイン語 tortuga と並べると、別語に見えて実は同じ「カメ」の系統だと分かる。
