古フランス語 enterprise（企て）から。entre-（間に）＋prendre（つかむ）の構成で、ラテン語 prehendere（つかむ）に遡る。「手を伸ばして何かをつかみ取る冒険的な試み」が原義。surprise（驚き＝不意につかむ）やcomprehend（理解する）も同じ語根を持つ。
