覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
まず名詞の「サプライズ」がそのまま動詞にもなると覚えると定着しやすいです。基本感覚は「予想していなかったことが起きて、相手がはっとする」。surprise 人で「人を驚かせる」、be surprised で「驚く」とセットで覚えると混乱しません。shock ほど強くて深刻ではなく、pleasant surprise のように「うれしい驚き」にも自然に使えます。birthday surprise, surprise visit など、突然の出来事と結びつけると意味がぶれにくいです。
Picture an unexpected birthday gift and the feeling it causes. Remember the noun phrases "a big surprise" and "a pleasant surprise" to connect the unexpected event with the person's reaction.

surprise の語源・成り立ち Etymology
surprise はフランス語 surprise を経て、ラテン語 super-「上から」+ prehendere「つかむ」にさかのぼります。もとは「不意をついて捕まえる」感覚で、apprehend や comprehend と同じ語根だと見ると、「驚かせる」意味につながります。
The word comes through French surprise from Latin elements meaning "over" and "grasp." The original idea was catching someone unexpectedly.
