delivery は古フランス語 delivrer を経て、ラテン語 de-「離して」+ liberare「自由にする」に由来します。liberty や liberal も同じ liber 系で、原義は「解放すること」。出産の意味は、子が母体から外へ「解き放たれる」と考えると腑に落ちます。
