postal は post＋-al。post はフランス語 poste を経て、ラテン語 ponere「置く」から来た語で、もとは馬や伝令を“配置する中継所”のこと。position や deposit と同じ置く感覚だと思うと、郵便制度の語である理由が見えてきます。
Postal comes from post plus the adjective ending -al. Post came through French poste and goes back to Latin ponere, meaning "to place," because it first referred to places where horses or messengers were stationed.
