解説 Definition
手紙や小包を郵便で送るときにかかる料金のこと。重さや大きさ、送り先、配送方法などによって金額が変わり、切手や窓口で支払う。宅配便全般の送料というより、主に郵便サービスに対して払う料金を指し、国内郵便にも国際郵便にも使われる。
Postage is the money charged for sending a letter or package by mail. It can also refer to the stamps or printed marks that show this payment has been made. The word is mainly used in postal and shipping situations.

postage は「郵便」を表す post に名詞語尾 -age が付いた語。post は中世ラテン語 posta を経て「置かれた中継所」の意から郵便制度を指し、そこから「郵送にかかる料金」つまり送料になった。関連語は postal, post。
Postage comes from post with the noun ending -age. Post came through Medieval Latin and first referred to a fixed stopping place or station on a route. From there it became linked to the mail system, and postage came to mean the charge paid for sending mail; postal is a related word.
