prism は後期ラテン語 prisma、さらにギリシャ語 prisma にさかのぼり、元は「のこぎりで切ったもの」の意です。光を切り分けて別々の色や面を見せる像から、今の「プリズム」や比喩的な「観点」という感覚が生まれ、関連語に prismatic があります。
Prism came through Late Latin from Greek prisma, which meant "something sawed" or "something cut." The word first referred to a cut geometric form with flat faces. From that shape, it later became strongly linked with the way such a form separates light; prismatic comes from the same source.
