コード、暗号、規則という意味です。コンピューターのプログラムや、数字・文字で表した番号、秘密の暗号などに使います。日本語の「コード」と同じ場合も多いですが、文脈で意味が変わります。

codeはラテン語codex（木の幹→書板→法典）に由来し、古フランス語codeを経て英語に入った。codexの原義は「木の板を束ねた書物」で、そこに書かれた法規や体系的規則を指すようになった。関連語にcodex（写本）、codify（法典化する）がある。「体系化された規則」が現代の暗号やプログラムの意味に発展した。
Code comes through French from Latin codex, originally referring to a block of wood and later to wooden writing tablets bound together as a book. Because important laws and rules were collected in such books, the word developed the sense of an organized body of rules. From that central idea of an ordered system came its modern uses for ciphers, identification numbers, and computer instructions.
