音が低く響く状態や色合いが濃い状態、または物理的・精神的に深みがある状態を指します。音声や色調の重厚さを説明する文脈で使われます。
Deep describes something that goes a long way down from the top or surface. It can also describe strong feelings, serious ideas, or detailed knowledge. The meaning depends on whether you are talking about physical space or something less concrete.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
deep は depth（深さ）・deeply（深く）・deepen（深くする）と一緒に覚えると、語の中心イメージが固まります。基本は「表面から奥へ、下へ入り込む」感覚。a deep hole, deep water の物理的な深さだけでなく、deep sleep, deep thinking, deep sorrow のように睡眠・思考・感情にも広がります。音なら deep voice で「低く響く声」、色なら deep blue で「濃い青」。high が上方向、tall が高さなのに対し、deep は下や内面への深さだと整理すると混同しにくいです。
Learn `deep` together with `depth`, `deeply`, and `deepen`. The image is going far down or far inside, not up like `high`. That is why it works for both physical things like `deep water` and abstract ones like `deep sleep` or `deep thinking`.

deep は古英語 deop にさかのぼるゲルマン系語で、分解できる接頭辞はなく「下へ深く沈む」感覚そのものが語幹です。depth や dip も同系で、物が表面より奥へ入り込むイメージが、そのまま空間にも考えにも使われて「深い」になりました。
Deep comes from Old English deop and is part of an old Germanic word family. It did not begin as a word built from clear smaller parts, but as a basic idea of going far down below the surface. From that physical image, English later used it for thoughts, feelings, and meanings as well as space. Related words include depth and dip.
