cord は「細めだが、ある程度しっかりしたひも」として覚えると広がりが整理しやすい。string より太く、rope ほど大げさではない中間の語で、靴ひも・カーテンひも・電源コードまで含められる。まず power cord, extension cord, pull the cord などの形で固定すると定着しやすい。つづりが似た chord は「和音」なので、音楽の文脈なら chord、物理的に引っ張ったりつないだりするなら cord と切り分ける。
