解説 Definition
between は二つの人・物・場所・時点の「間」を示す前置詞で、位置関係だけでなく、二者の比較・選択・共有・移動の範囲を表すときにも使う。three 以上が関わる場面でも、両端や対立する二群を意識すると用いられることがある。
Between shows the position, time, or relationship in the middle of two or more separate things. It is often used for place, time, numbers, choices, or connections. With two clear points, between is the most common word.

between は「B と C を両端に置き、その真ん中に A がある」と絵で覚えると強いです。among が「集団の中に広くまぎれる」感じなのに対し、between は境界や対立する二者・二点をはっきり意識する語。between you and me, choose between A and B, a road between Tokyo and Osaka のように、場所だけでなく関係・選択・時間にも広がります。三者以上でも、両端や二つのグループが見えていれば between が使えます。

古英語 betweonum に由来し、be- と twā「二つ」に関係する語形から発達した。もともとは「二つのものの中ほど」を示し、そこから場所・時間・関係の「間」を表す基本前置詞として広く使われるようになった。
"Between" comes from Old English "betweonum." It developed from old elements connected with "by" or "be-" and "two," so its earliest sense was being in the middle of two things. From that idea, it widened to express position, time, amount, and relationships.
