「〜の間で」という意味の前置詞で、3つ以上のもの・人の中にあること、またはそれらに囲まれていることを表します。2つのものの間を示す「between」とは異なり、複数（通常3つ以上）のものに対して使います。「仲間の一員として」というニュアンスで「～の中に混じって」という意味でも使われます。

amongは古英語on gemangに由来し、on「中に」+ gemang「入り混じった群れ」と考えられます。核のmang-は「混ぜ合わせる」で、amongが単なる位置ではなく「人や物が交じる中で」を感じさせる理由が見えます。amongstやmingleが近い仲間です。
