「〜の間で」という意味の前置詞で、3つ以上のもの・人の中にあること、またはそれらに囲まれていることを表します。2つのものの間を示す「between」とは異なり、複数（通常3つ以上）のものに対して使います。「仲間の一員として」というニュアンスで「～の中に混じって」という意味でも使われます。
Among means in the middle of a group or included as part of a group. It is used when talking about more than two people, things, or ideas together. In many cases, it shows sharing, connection, or being surrounded by others.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

amongは古英語on gemangに由来し、on「中に」+ gemang「入り混じった群れ」と考えられます。核のmang-は「混ぜ合わせる」で、amongが単なる位置ではなく「人や物が交じる中で」を感じさせる理由が見えます。amongstやmingleが近い仲間です。
Among comes from Old English on gemang, with the sense of being "in a mixed group" or "in the middle of a crowd." Its older root is connected with mixing and mingling, not just simple position. That is why among often suggests being surrounded by things or people that are together in one group. It is related in spirit to amongst and mingle.
