Amongst means in the middle of or included within a group of people or things. It has the same meaning as "among," but it sounds slightly more formal or literary.

古英語 on gemang（群衆の中に）が短縮されてamongとなり、-stが付加された形。gemangは「混ざり合い」を意味する。関連語：among（同義）、mingle（混ざる）。amongと同義だがやや文語的・英国的な響きを持つ。
Amongst is an older form of among. Among comes from Old English on gemang, with the sense of being in a mixed group or in the middle of others. The ending -st was added later, giving the word a slightly more literary or traditional tone, especially in British English. It is related in meaning to ideas of mixing, as in mingle.
